Chapter 8 MINT List
We were expecting a knock at the door. When it came, my partner Matty and I gave the hotel room one last visual check. Everything seemed in place — my suitcase sat on the floor with the Amsterdam baggage tag clearly in view; my bogus Pan Am identification card lay on the dresser. I straightened my tie and took a deep breath. It was show time!
A middle-aged man with a receding hairline entered the room. He looked more like a pharmacist than a heroin dealer. With his untucked Hawaiian-style shirt I couldn’t tell if he was armed or not. I didn’t think so. I wasn’t expecting trouble. After all, he had paid me to be there. We shook hands. He nodded in recognition of Matty.
I spread the schematic diagram of a Boeing 747 jumbo jetliner on the bed and got down to business. “Matty will hide your stuff behind these walls,” I said, pointing to the bathrooms at the rear of the plane. Then we’ll get it out when the plane lands and deliver it back to you wherever you want it.” It was nonsense, of course. The dope was never going to leave Bangkok.
I had decided to have the informant skip the meeting to lessen the chance of his having to testify at trial. We knew this guy spoke some English. He seemed to understand well enough, nodding his head as I went along, although he didn’t ask any questions. When I finished my spiel, he smiled and said he would be back in one hour then left.
Matty opened the door to the adjoining room and was assured by the crew next door that the conversation, although pretty much one-sided, had been recorded. I retrieved the two-way radio stashed in the closet, turned it on and set in on the desk. Whether or not the crook would return was anybody’s guess. If he suspected something was amiss, he would be in the wind. We would just have to wait and see. That was always the hard part. The waiting. I sat down on the bed, fluffed a pillow behind my head, and let my mind wander off to when the investigation had begun…
